Technical Themes

Theme 1: Subsurface Storage and Site Selection

Description: The subsurface storage theme aims to address key technical challenges in assessing geologic reservoirs, estimating storage resources and capacity, injectivity, and containment for the permanent and safe storage of CO₂. This includes saline aquifers, depleted reservoirs, offshore, and basalts storage along with site specific to regional evaluations in saline storage, converted oil and gas fields, associated storage through CO₂-EOR, or any other storage options for onshore and offshore applications. Topics could include, but are not limited to:

  1. Reservoir Characterization
  2. Storage Resources and Capacity
  3. Injectivity
  4. Containment
  5. Regional Assessments

Theme 2: CO₂ Utilization

Description: The CO₂ utilization theme aims to highlight the benefits of utilizing CO₂ for enhanced hydrocarbon recovery in oil and gas fields and other areas: how can CO₂-EOR help solve greenhouse gas emissions and what is the future need for CO₂ in EOR? How else can CO₂ be utilized in the oil and gas industry? This could include the use of CO₂ to flood new fields, as a secondary or tertiary recovery method, or to explore the redevelopment of a depleted field in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Topics could include, but are not limited to:

  1. Field Tests
  2. Laboratory Studies
  3. Evaluation of Potential Fields
  4. Transitioning Oil Fields from “Business as Usual” Class II to Class VI Geologic Storage
  5. Operational Strategies to Maximize CO₂ Retainment

Theme 3: Modeling

Description: Modeling of storage systems, both saline and EOR, is a critical part of validating feasibility and in meeting regulations. This could include the designing of injection wells, EOR scenarios, and CO₂ plume migration. Topics could include, but are not limited to:

  1. Well Design
  2. Well Conversion
  3. Static Earth Models of Reservoirs and Confining Systems
  4. Dynamic Simulations
  5. Flow and Thermal Modeling
  6. Geomechanics
  7. Geochemistry
  8. Integration with Monitoring Technology

Theme 4: Monitoring

Description: Determining if a CCUS/CCS storage project is on course for success will be predicated on clearly tracking the movements, concentration, and long-term fate of CO₂ plumes in the subsurface.Therefore, rigorous monitoring efforts will be critical to meet Class VI permit requirements, greenhouse gas reporting requirements, and to satisfy subpart RR requirements for Section 45Q tax credits. This session will concentrate on surface and subsurface techniques and strategies for approaching this critical piece of the storage puzzle. Topics under this theme could include, but are not limited to:

  1. Monitoring Plan Development
  2. Workflows
  3. Technology Integration
  4. Subsurface Technologies
  5. Surface Technologies
  6. Lessons Learned from Oil and Gas, and/or Field Tests

Theme 5: Risk Assessment

Description: This theme aims to address recent advances in the field of risk assessment associated with injection and storage of CO₂ in both saline and EOR settings to better understand the critical concerns of the safety of storing and/or utilizing CO₂. Topics under this theme could include, but are not limited to:

  1. Subsurface Leakage Assessments
  2. Baffle Systems
  3. Induced Seismicity
  4. Qualitative Risk Assessment Tools and Workflows
  5. Geomechanics
  6. Geochemistry
  7. Impacts of Leakage on Shallow Aquifers

Theme 6: Case Studies

Description: Real world examples and applications are important to help understand the feasibility of using the subsurface to safely store carbon dioxide and to develop methods for their deployment. The lessons learned from previous attempts to sequester carbon dioxide and the geological challenges associated with ongoing storage locations will help inform and provide additional site selection choices. This theme will also highlight case studies and important topics that influence a successful CCUS project. These topics could include, but are not limited to:

Theme 7: Financial, Economics, and Regulatory Framework

Description: While technical challenges with CCUS have been the mainstay of R&D over the years, near-term commercial deployment also hinges on the resolution of non-technical challenges such as legal access to pore space, UIC permitting, long-term liability, policy, and regulations, economic drivers, and economic tools, methods, and models. This session will address these issues in an ever-evolving landscape and sense of urgency with the development and deployment of CCUs technologies.

Theme 9: ESGs and Stakeholder Engagement

Description: Environment, sustainability, and governance (ESGs) and stakeholder engagement are critical components to successful development of commercial scale storage programs. Public perception and communication can make or break the advancement of a project. This session could include the following topics:

Theme 10: Machine Learning and Data Analytics Applications

Description: There are many challenges in characterization, modeling, and monitoring for CCUS including data availability, missing information, big datasets, and understanding potential reservoir and caprock performance. This session will showcase projects and progress in the application of machine learning and data analytics to CCUS challenges. This session could include the following topics:
